Owner-Operated Fence Builders
Why Choose Blueprint to Build Your Fence?
A fence is a long-term investment, and most of it is below ground. The posts decide whether it stays straight for fifteen years or leans after two winters. Blueprint sets posts in line and below the frost line, attaches rails and boards square, and finishes the wood so it stays protected. We also repair and rebuild fences that have leaned, rotted or blown down. Because we are owner-operated, the person who quotes your fence is accountable for it.
Before we dig a single hole we request utility locates, so a post never ends up through a gas, power or telecom line. We measure your property, talk through height, gate placement and which side faces out, and give you a clear quote. We also tell you honestly when a repair will do and a full rebuild is not needed. We build fences for homes, back lanes and side yards in Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane and Okotoks.
- Owner-operated, no call centre

How We Build a Fence
Estimate and Measure
We walk the property line, measure the runs, note slopes, gates and what is there now, and agree the height and style with you.
Utility Locates
We request locates through Click Before You Dig and wait for the marks before any digging starts.
Remove the Old Fence
If there is an old fence, it comes down and is hauled away, and posts are pulled so the new line is clean.
Layout and Post Holes
We string the line, mark each post and drill holes to a depth below the frost line, adjusting around marked utilities.
Setting Posts
Posts go in plumb and in line, backfilled and tamped, and left to set before any weight goes on them.
Rails and Framing
Rails are fastened between the posts at the right heights, so the boards have solid, level support.
Boards, Gates and Stain
Boards go on square, gates are hung and braced so they swing freely, and the wood is stained for protection.
Final Walkthrough
We walk the full line with you, tidy the work area and make sure you are happy before we call the job done.
What to Expect in a Calgary Fence Project
How Much Does a Fence Cost in Calgary?
Fence prices are quoted per linear foot, and the final number depends on more than the length. Height, the style of fence, the number of gates, whether an old fence has to come out and what the ground is like all change the price. A fence on level, clear ground costs less than one on a slope with roots, rock or tight access. We measure the job and give you a clear quote rather than a guess over the phone.
Below are the factors that move the price of a fence in Calgary and the surrounding area:
- Length and height of the fence
- Style and quality of boards
- Number and size of gates
- Old fence removal and hauling
- Slope, rock, roots and access
- Stain or other finish

Click Before You Dig
A fence post is a hole in the ground, and Calgary lanes and yards are full of buried gas, power, telephone and fibre lines. Before we dig, we request free utility locates through Click Before You Dig, the Alberta One-Call service at 1-800-242-3447, and wait for the lines to be marked. Plan on at least three full working days. The paint colours tell us what is below: red for electric, yellow for gas, orange for telecommunications. Near a marked line we dig carefully by hand where needed and move a post if we have to. The photo shows locate marks on a Calgary lane before a fence and concrete job. We follow the same locate steps on our concrete and garage jobs.
- Locates requested before work starts
- Marks respected and posts adjusted
- Careful digging near marked lines
- Safer for you and your neighbours
Posts, Rails and Boards
Wood Fence Construction in Calgary
A good wood fence starts with the posts. We set them in holes drilled below the frost line, in line and plumb, so winter ground movement does not push them out. Rails go on between the posts, then the boards, then the stain. Wood is the most common fence in Calgary because it is private, repairable and looks good. Boards shrink and move as they dry, which is why we fasten them carefully and finish the wood. The photo shows a new wood fence with posts, rails and boards along a Calgary lane.
- Posts below the frost line
- Rails and boards fastened square
- Gates hung and braced
- Stain for protection
When a Fence Has Seen Better Days
Fence Repair and Rebuilds
Fences fail in a few predictable ways: posts rot at the ground line, rails sag, boards split and a storm pushes a section over. A repair makes sense when the posts are sound and only boards, rails or a gate have failed. If the posts are rotted or leaning along the whole run, replacing posts one at a time costs more than starting over. We tell you which one applies after we look. The photo shows a collapsed fence frame on a Calgary lane before it was rebuilt. See our fence repair page.
- Leaning and rotted posts replaced
- Broken boards and rails repaired
- Gates adjusted or rebuilt
- Full rebuilds when repair will not last
Know the Limits Before You Build
Calgary Fence Height and Permit Rules
In Calgary, a fence in the front yard, between the street and the front of the house, can be up to 1.2 metres high. Fences elsewhere on the property can be up to 2.0 metres, and gates up to 2.5 metres. Corner lots have sightline rules, and your property lines and any utility right-of-ways matter too. A fence that stays within those limits generally does not need a permit, but check the City of Calgary Land Use Bylaw for your property before you build. We will talk through height and placement with you at the estimate.
- Front yard fences up to 1.2 m
- Side and rear fences up to 2.0 m
- Gates up to 2.5 m
- Corner lots need sightline checks
What to Look for in a Fence Builder
Choosing the Right Fence Contractor in Calgary
When you compare fence contractors, look past the price per foot. Ask whether they request utility locates, how deep the posts go, what the boards and fasteners are, and who will be on your property. Ask for a quote that spells out height, gates, old fence removal and stain. A fence builder who answers those questions plainly, and who is easy to reach after the job, is the one to hire. Fences built in a hurry tend to lean within a few winters, and a quote that skips locates or post depth is a quote that skips something important.
We measure carefully, request locates before we dig and set posts to last. Every fence we build is one we are willing to put our name on.

Questions About Fences
Fence Questions, Answered
The questions Calgary homeowners ask us most about building and fixing a fence.
-
Q.Do I need a permit to build a fence in Calgary?
Usually not, as long as the fence stays within the height limits in the City's Land Use Bylaw: 1.2 metres in the front yard, 2.0 metres elsewhere and gates up to 2.5 metres. A taller fence may need a development permit. Check the bylaw for your property before you build.
-
Q.How tall can my fence be?
In the front yard, between the street and the front of the house, the limit is 1.2 metres. Side and rear fences can be up to 2.0 metres. Corner lots have extra sightline rules, so tell us if yours is a corner.
-
Q.Does my neighbour have to pay for half the fence?
Alberta's Line Fence Act deals with fences that keep livestock in, so it generally does not set a rule for an ordinary city yard. Sharing the cost is a conversation with your neighbour. We are happy to quote the fence so you both see the same numbers.
-
Q.Which side of the fence faces the neighbour?
There is no Calgary rule on this. Many builders face the finished side out toward the neighbour or the lane as a courtesy. We discuss it with you at the estimate and build it the way you prefer.
-
Q.How much does a wood fence cost in Calgary?
Fences are priced per linear foot, and the total depends on length, height, gates, old fence removal and ground conditions. We measure the job and give you a clear written quote rather than a number over the phone.
-
Q.How long does a wood fence last?
A well-built, stained wood fence often lasts fifteen years or more with some upkeep. Post depth, wood quality and how well the boards are fastened make the biggest difference, along with re-staining every few years.
-
Q.Can you build a fence in winter?
Often, yes, when the ground can be worked. Frozen ground makes digging slower and sometimes impossible, so spring through fall is the easiest time. We will tell you what is realistic when you call.
-
Q.Do you request utility locates before building a fence?
Yes. Every fence job starts with a locate request through Click Before You Dig. Plan on at least three full working days before digging, and we adjust post positions around anything that is marked.
-
Q.Which areas do you serve?
We build and repair fences across Calgary and in Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane and Okotoks, and in the areas between.
