Metal Roofing Calgary
Metal Roofs Built for Snow, Wind and Decades of Weather
A metal roof can outlast several shingle roofs, shed snow quickly and stand up to wind. It also costs more up front and depends heavily on how it is installed. Blueprint installs and repairs metal roofing in Calgary and nearby towns, with the underlayment, flashing, snow guards and fasteners that decide whether the roof lasts. You deal with the owner from the estimate to the final cleanup.

There are so many good things to say about Blueprint Construction and it is impossible to fit everything I want to say within a single Google review. Our house was heavily damaged by a hail storm, and Blueprint Construction was incredibly helpful right from the start. The owner came to our home the same day we reached out and he provided a detailed quote. I also received quotes from a few different companies and Blueprint saved me about $9000 in total for siding and roof replacement/repair. There was very little waiting, and the team that worked on our house was incredibly professional. They went above and beyond and you could tell that they cared about their work. The clean-up was also well-done, and I couldn't find any nails or other stray materials on my lawn or flowerbed. The end result was fantastic and the owner checked-in with us throughout the process to ensure we were satisfied with everything. Overall, I couldn't be happier and I would highly recommend this company for anyone needing repairs to their house.Posted on Google![]()

Metal Roofing for Calgary Homes
Metal roofing is steel or aluminum panels fastened over a solid deck, finished with a baked-on coating. Compared with asphalt shingles, it is lighter on the structure, sheds snow and rain quickly, resists fire and wind and can last 40 years or more. It is not right for every house or budget, and not every installer does it well. The panels are only half the roof. The underlayment, the flashing at every edge and penetration and the way the panels expand and contract decide how it performs.
- Standing seam and ribbed panels
- Steel and aluminum options
- Ice barrier and underlayment
- Flashing and trim detailed carefully
- Snow guards where needed
- Tear-off and disposal
Two Main Types
Standing Seam or Ribbed Metal Roofing
Standing seam panels have raised seams that lock together, with the fasteners hidden. They look clean, handle thermal movement well and cost more. Ribbed or corrugated panels are fastened through the face with screws and rubber washers, and they cost less but need their fasteners checked and replaced over time. We talk through which one suits your house, budget and look, and show samples at your estimate.
- Standing seam: hidden fasteners, cleaner look
- Ribbed panels: lower cost, visible screws
- Colours and finishes
- Samples at your estimate
Hidden Layers
Underlayment, Ice Barrier and Ventilation
Under the panels, a metal roof needs a clean, flat deck and a high-temperature underlayment that can handle the heat that metal holds. We install ice and water membrane along eaves and in valleys and ventilate the attic so snow melts evenly and ice dams do not form. Metal sheds snow fast, which can drop an avalanche onto a doorway or neighbour, so we plan the layout and snow guards for where snow will land.
- Deck repaired and prepared
- High-temperature underlayment
- Ice barrier at eaves and valleys
- Ventilation planned
Where Leaks Happen
Flashing, Penetrations and Details
The details are where metal roofs succeed or fail. Chimneys, skylights, pipes and walls all need flashing that is cut, formed and sealed to the panel profile. Panels expand and contract with temperature, so fasteners and seams must allow movement. We form flashing carefully, use compatible sealants and metals so they do not corrode and leave a roof that is tight at every opening.
- Chimney, skylight and pipe flashing
- Compatible metals and sealants
- Panels allowed to move
- Ridge and eave details finished
Hail and Dents
Metal Roofs and Hail
Metal roofs resist hail better than most shingles, but thin panels can dent. Dents may be cosmetic, and some insurers treat cosmetic damage differently, so check your policy. Thicker steel and standing seam profiles resist denting better. If hail has hit your roof, we inspect and document the damage, and our hail damage page explains the process.
- Heavier gauges resist dents
- Cosmetic damage policies vary
- Inspections after hail
- Photos for your claim
Replacing or Repairing
Metal Roof Repair and Replacement
Metal roofs can need repair too: loose or corroded fasteners, failed sealant, damaged flashing, a dented panel or a leak at a seam. We inspect the roof, find the cause and repair or replace the failed part. If your existing roof is shingles and you want metal, we remove the old roofing, repair the deck and install the new roof in one project.
- Fasteners and sealant renewed
- Damaged panels replaced
- Leaks traced to the source
- Shingle-to-metal conversions
The best roof is the one that fits your house, your budget and how long you will stay.

Frequently Asked Questions About Metal Roofing
-
Q. How much does a metal roof cost in Calgary?
Metal roofing generally costs more than shingles, often two to three times as much, depending on the panel type and the roof shape. We measure the roof and give you a clear quote that lists the materials and details.
-
Q. How long does a metal roof last?
A well-installed metal roof commonly lasts 40 years or more, and standing seam roofs can last longer. The coating, the details and the installation make the difference.
-
Q. What is the biggest problem with metal roofs?
The main drawbacks are cost and installation quality. Fasteners, seams and flashing details have to be right, and thin panels can dent in hail. A good installer makes these manageable.
-
Q. Are metal roofs noisy in the rain?
Not when installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Most people find them about as quiet as a shingle roof, and an insulated attic reduces sound further.
-
Q. Do metal roofs work in Calgary winters?
Yes. They shed snow quickly, but that snow can slide in sheets, so snow guards are often added above doors, decks and walkways.
-
Q. Can you put a metal roof over shingles?
We do not recommend it. Removing the old roofing lets us repair the deck and install proper underlayment and flashing, which is where roofs fail.
-
Q. Will hail dent a metal roof?
It can, especially thinner panels. Heavier gauges and standing seam profiles resist dents better. Check your insurance policy for how it treats cosmetic damage to metal roofs.
-
Q. Are metal roofs energy efficient?
A light-coloured, reflective metal roof can reduce heat gain in summer. In Calgary, the bigger energy factor is attic insulation and ventilation, which we check as part of the roof.
-
Q. What colours are available?
Metal roofing comes in a wide range of baked-on colours and finishes. We bring samples to your estimate so you can compare them in daylight against your house.
-
Q. Can metal roofing be repaired?
Yes. We repair fasteners, sealant, flashing and damaged panels, and trace leaks to their source.
-
Q. Is a metal roof worth it?
It can be, if you plan to stay in the house and want a long-lasting roof. If you plan to sell soon, shingles may be a better value. We help you weigh it.
-
Q. Do metal roofs need maintenance?
Very little. Check the fasteners, sealant and flashing every few years, keep the roof clear of debris and wash it occasionally. Do not walk on it unless you know how.
-
Q. Do you install metal roofing on garages and sheds?
Yes. Metal roofing suits garages, sheds and outbuildings as well as houses. Tell us the building and we will quote it.
-
Q. Do metal roofs rust?
Quality steel panels have a zinc or aluminum-zinc coating and a baked-on paint finish that resist rust for decades. Rust usually starts at cut edges, scratches or exposed fasteners, which is why careful installation and touch-up matter.
-
Q. Do I need special insurance for a metal roof?
Tell your insurer you are installing one. Some insurers give a discount for impact-resistant or fire-resistant roofing, and some treat cosmetic hail damage on metal differently, so it is worth asking before you decide.
-
Q. How heavy is a metal roof compared with shingles?
Metal panels are usually lighter than asphalt shingles, which puts less load on the roof structure. We still check the deck and framing before we install.
-
Q. How long does a metal roof installation take?
Most houses take several days once the materials arrive, depending on size, roof shape and weather. Standing seam roofs with many details take longer than a simple ribbed roof.
-
Q. Can I walk on a metal roof?
You can, but metal roofs are slippery when wet, icy or snowy and can dent if walked on carelessly. Leave roof work to professionals, and use proper fall protection if you must go up.
-
Q. Does a metal roof need snow guards?
Often yes. Metal sheds snow all at once, which can fall onto walkways, doors, decks and cars. Snow guards hold the snow in place so it melts or slides off gradually.
-
Q. Do metal roofs make cell and radio signals worse?
Metal can weaken some indoor signals, particularly weak cell reception, but most people notice little difference. If it is a concern, we can talk through options such as a signal booster before you decide.
-
Q. Which areas do you serve?
We install metal roofing in Calgary and in Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane and Okotoks, and in the areas between.
