There are so many good things to say about Blueprint Construction and it is impossible to fit everything I want to say within a single Google review. Our house was heavily damaged by a hail storm, and Blueprint Construction was incredibly helpful right from the start. The owner came to our home the same day we reached out and he provided a detailed quote. I also received quotes from a few different companies and Blueprint saved me about $9000 in total for siding and roof replacement/repair. There was very little waiting, and the team that worked on our house was incredibly professional. They went above and beyond and you could tell that they cared about their work. The clean-up was also well-done, and I couldn't find any nails or other stray materials on my lawn or flowerbed. The end result was fantastic and the owner checked-in with us throughout the process to ensure we were satisfied with everything. Overall, I couldn't be happier and I would highly recommend this company for anyone needing repairs to their house.Posted on Google![]()

What James Hardie Siding Is
James Hardie siding is made of fibre cement, a mix of cement, sand and cellulose fibres, pressed into boards that look like wood lap siding, shakes or panels. It is heavier than vinyl, does not rot, resists fire and holds paint and colour well. Boards are cut and installed by trained crews with the right tools, because cutting fibre cement creates silica dust that needs control. Done right, it is one of the most durable exteriors you can put on a house in Calgary.
- Fibre cement lap, shingle and panel styles
- Non-combustible and rot resistant
- Factory-finished or paintable
- Heavier and harder than vinyl
- Matching trim and soffit
- Installed over house wrap
Hail, Fire and Rot
Why Calgary Homeowners Choose Hardie
The reasons come up again and again: hail, fire and long-term cost. Fibre cement resists hail impact better than vinyl, which can crack, and it does not melt or burn. It holds its shape through freeze and thaw cycles, and it does not rot or get eaten by pests. It costs more up front than vinyl, so the decision is about how long you will stay and how much you value durability. We give you a clear quote for both so you can compare.
- Better hail resistance than vinyl
- Fire resistant
- Does not rot or warp
- Higher cost, longer life
Style and Finish
Hardie Siding Profiles and Colours
Hardie boards come as smooth or wood-grain lap siding in several widths, as shingle-style panels, vertical board and batten and flat panels. Factory-applied colour finishes are baked on and resist fading, and unfinished boards can be primed and painted on site. We bring samples to your estimate so you can see colours and textures in daylight, and we talk through the look that suits your house and neighbourhood.
- Lap, shingle and panel profiles
- Smooth and wood-grain textures
- Factory colour finishes
- Samples at your estimate
Craft Matters
How Hardie Siding Is Installed
Fibre cement installs differently from vinyl. Boards are heavy and are fastened tightly with corrosion-resistant nails at the right spacing, and the joints are flashed and caulked so water cannot get in. We install house wrap, flash windows and doors, maintain the clearance from the ground and roofline the manufacturer calls for and cut boards with dust-controlling tools, outdoors, with respiratory protection. Careless installation is the most common reason Hardie siding fails.
- Fastened to manufacturer specifications
- Joints flashed and sealed
- Ground and roof clearances kept
- Dust controlled during cutting
Replacing Older Siding
Replacing Vinyl, Masonite and Cedar with Hardie
Many Calgary homes still wear original masonite siding from the 1980s or cedar from the 1990s, and those boards are often rotted behind the surface. Replacing them with Hardie means taking the old siding off, checking and repairing the sheathing and installing new house wrap before the new boards go on. It is also a good time to add foam insulation under the new siding to raise the wall's R-value.
- Old siding removed and hauled away
- Sheathing checked and repaired
- New house wrap installed
- Foam insulation option
Fibre Cement After Hail
Hardie Siding and Insurance Claims
If hail has damaged your siding, a claim may pay to replace it, and some homeowners choose to upgrade to fibre cement when they do. Your policy and adjuster decide what is covered, and the difference between vinyl and Hardie is usually the homeowner's cost. We photograph the damage, estimate both options and explain the difference so you can decide.
- Damage photographed for your claim
- Vinyl and Hardie both quoted
- Upgrade difference explained
- Repairs after approval
Both are good siding. The right one depends on your budget and how long you will stay.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hardie Board Siding
-
Q. How much does Hardie siding cost in Calgary?
Hardie siding costs more than vinyl, often meaningfully more, depending on the house size, profile, finish and trim. We measure and give you a clear quote for Hardie and vinyl so you can compare.
-
Q. Is Hardie siding better than vinyl?
Hardie is heavier, more hail resistant, non-combustible and holds paint, but it costs more and needs more care in installation. Vinyl is cheaper and low maintenance. The better choice depends on your budget and plans. See our vinyl siding page for the details.
-
Q. Will Hardie siding survive hail?
It resists hail better than vinyl, but very large hail can still chip or crack boards. If hail damages it, we inspect and document the damage for a claim.
-
Q. How long does Hardie siding last?
Properly installed fibre cement siding commonly lasts decades. Installation quality, the finish and maintenance such as re-caulking make a big difference.
-
Q. Does Hardie siding need to be painted?
Factory-finished boards come with a baked-on colour and need little for years. Primed boards are painted after installation. Either may need repainting eventually.
-
Q. What does the installer need to do differently with fibre cement?
Fibre cement is heavy and brittle and creates silica dust when cut. A good installer cuts outdoors with dust control, fastens to specification, flashes joints and keeps proper clearances. Ask any contractor how they handle these.
-
Q. Can you install Hardie over my existing siding?
We do not recommend it. Removing the old siding lets us check and repair the wall and install house wrap, which is what protects the house.
-
Q. Do you use James Hardie products specifically?
Yes, when you choose James Hardie. We also install other siding materials, and we help you compare options for your home.
-
Q. How long does it take to install Hardie siding?
Most houses take one to three weeks depending on size, weather and the amount of trim. Fibre cement takes longer than vinyl because the boards are heavier.
-
Q. Can Hardie siding be installed in winter?
It can, but cold weather slows installation and affects caulk and paint. Many homeowners schedule it for spring through fall.
-
Q. Is Hardie siding fireproof?
It is non-combustible, which means it does not burn, but nothing is fireproof. It helps slow a fire's spread compared with vinyl or wood.
-
Q. Can I add insulation under Hardie siding?
Yes. We can fit rigid foam board behind new siding while the wall is open, which raises the R-value and reduces heat loss.
-
Q. Does Hardie siding add value to a home?
Durable, good-looking siding helps curb appeal and can help resale. It will not pay back in a single year, but buyers like low-maintenance, long-lasting exteriors.
-
Q. Do you repair Hardie siding?
Yes. We replace cracked boards, re-caulk joints and repair trim. Colour matching works best with factory-finished boards from the same line.
-
Q. What does a good Hardie siding quote include?
It should list the house wrap, flashing, boards, trim, soffit, fasteners, caulk, disposal and any wall repairs, and say which finish and profile are included.
-
Q. Does Hardie siding need special trim?
Fibre cement siding is installed with matching trim boards, corners and flashing, usually in the same finish. Trim is part of the system and is what keeps water out at corners, windows and doors.
-
Q. What is ColorPlus and is it worth it?
ColorPlus is James Hardie's factory-applied baked-on colour finish. It saves on-site painting and resists fading well, but offers a set palette. Primed boards can be painted any colour but need on-site painting.
-
Q. Can Hardie siding be installed on any house?
Most houses can take it if the wall structure is sound. The boards are heavier than vinyl, so we check the framing and sheathing, and we install proper house wrap and flashing first.
-
Q. How is Hardie siding different from other fibre cement siding?
James Hardie is the best-known fibre cement brand, with factory finishes, matched trim and installation guidelines. Other brands exist, and the principles of proper flashing, fastening and clearances are the same, which is why we focus on the installation.
-
Q. Which areas do you serve?
We install Hardie board siding in Calgary and in Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane and Okotoks, and in the areas between.
